Facebook Twitter By Elizabeth Handley Green space gives us areas to play and exercise outdoors, to spend time with family, to rest the eye from all the bitumen and concrete, and to improve our mental and physical health. Brisbane has had an undersupply of public green space and sport and recreation areas for a long […]

The secret world of Brisbane town planning

Facebook Twitter by Elizabeth Handley Politicians talk about transparent processes all the time. This means government should be open and honest and, unless national security is involved, should not be done in secret. However, this is a transparency that our tax-funded representatives on the Brisbane City Council and State and Federal government seem keen to avoid. […]

Facebook Twitter by Elizabeth Handley In 1977 Woody Allen said “80 percent of success is showing up”. He isn’t wrong. If you want to influence the outcome, you must participate in the process. Political donations, you give so you can receive

by Elizabeth Handley Politicians have a distorted moral compass on political donations. In paying tribute to Ian Macfarlane who exterminated Labor’s Mining Tax, Tony Abbott said: It was a magnificent achievement by the [member] for Groom in his time as minister … and I hope the sector will acknowledge and demonstrate their gratitude to him […]

Facebook Twitter by Elizabeth Handley In 2014 philosopher Alain de Botton caused an outcry when he criticised the city of Brisbane.  “ People who have no interest whatsoever in making any city even remotely beautiful or dignified can get away with some truly terrible construction projects free of any fear of being criticised. Queensland’s Planning laws are changing – and not for the better

Facebook Twitter by Elizabeth Handley New state planning legislation is being proposed. It has been judged by an international architect to be less democratic than Saudi Arabia’s. The legislation is specifically designed to weaken or remove town planning controls on development. Planning is a State and Council issue. Under the legislation, developers can employ their own private […]

Facebook Twitter by Elizabeth Handley A few years ago I noticed that an increasing number of sport/recreation areas and large areas of greenspace were disappearing in Brisbane. ‘They should do something about that’, became ‘I should do something about that’ when the Milton Tennis court site was sold for high rise development. Another sports and […]

About Park It

Park IT (Park in Toowong Community Group) is a local community group fighting to create a park on the last river side site available in Toowong.

The old ABC site is 15,000 square meters, flood prone with a river frontage of approximately 130 metres.  It is the ideal site for a river side park.

The community has been lobbying for many years for this parkland.  They were encouraged to believe that the Brisbane City Council and the State Government were working towards that goal.  By keeping up community pressure we can still achieve a wonderful park to be enjoyed for many generations to come.
